The Great Golden Buddha of Wat Paknam Phasi Charoen at sunset, seen glowing in golden light above Bangkok Yai canal with the white chedi and city skyline behind it.

Held in Golden Twilight

The Great Golden Buddha rises above the quiet waters of Bangkok Yai canal, its huge gilded form catching the last warmth of a December sky. The giant seated figure watches over the canal from its perch beside the slender white Maharatchamongkhon Stupa, and on this particular evening the two structures stood together against a wash of orange and rose, the colour deepening as the sun dropped behind the city.

I was given the exact location of this vantage point by Sayantan’s Photography, and as you can see, the Great Golden Buddha and the stupa line up perfectly with the water, the old wooden houses, and the road bridge that slices through the frame beneath them. It is a strange and wonderful contrast. A sacred Buddha statue seemingly floating above the bridge and the now peaceful Bangkok canal.

I arrived as the light was already fading, though a scattering of high cloud held onto some colour longer than I expected. A couple of local residents were going about their evening along the canal bank, unhurried, while the scene behind them lit up window by window. Another photographer arrived just as I was packing up. I often wonder what images he captured. There is something about this hour, caught between day and night, that makes the whole scene feel suspended, as though the canal itself is holding its breath before the dark settles in.

The stillness of the water added to that feeling, the reflected light spreading out in soft streaks rather than sharp ripples, giving the canal a calm, almost dreamlike quality beneath the towering structures above it.

If you would like to find this location and explore the area on foot, then I have two walks which feature this district of Thonburi on my Lens Wandering website. Firstly, there is the comprehensive Talat Phlu Food Market Walk: King Taksin’s Historic Thonburi Trail. Alternatively, and slightly shorter, you might prefer Talat Phlu Food Market Walk: The Condensed Thonburi Guide. Both come with maps and detailed route guidance.

Photographer’s Note

“I shot this from the terrace at Suriya Coffee on 30 December 2025, just after sunset at about 6:30 p.m., with the sky carrying a bit of high cloud that held the colour a little longer than a clear evening would have. This was a 10-second exposure on a tripod, which helped slightly smooth the canal’s surface. In post, I lifted the saturation slightly and brought up the shadows to bring out more of the canal life underneath the Buddha. I did toy with removing the power lines running across the frame, and even had a version done in Photoshop, but in the end, I left them in. They are part of what this place actually looks like, and I felt the shot was more honest for keeping them.

I have also captured the Great Golden Buddha from directly across the Bangkok Yai canal, which provides a different perspective with the statue this time appearing to float on nearby rooftops.”
