Low angle view of a Bangkok backstreet reflection in a puddle, showing a billboard and the Sathorn Unique Tower.

Rainwater Horizons

Sathorn Unique Tower looms over a narrow Bangkok backstreet, just off Charoen Krung Road, its skeleton draped in a massive advertisement. This abandoned skyscraper stands as a hollow monument to the 1997 financial crisis. The alley below provides a stark contrast with its weathered walls and tangled overhead wires. Rainwater has gathered on the uneven pavement to form a dark, shimmering pool. This still water creates a perfect mirror image of the tower and its colorful billboard. A yellow scooter parked further down the lane adds a single pop of local colour. Shadows stretch across the shuttered shopfronts while the sun illuminates the upper levels of the Sathorn Unique Tower, commonly called the Ghost Tower.

This photograph brings with it a contemplative urban atmosphere, balancing deep shadows with luminous reflections. The vertical composition draws the eye inward, inviting viewers to explore the subtle dialogue between the alleyway, the distant skyline, and the mirrored world held within the water. Its restrained palette and strong geometry create a sense of calm observation.

Photographer’s Note

“I found this framing while exploring the lanes near Charoen Krung Road. I shot this roughly at eye level, unlike this very low angle shot at the same location, where the reflection fills the frame. The symmetry highlights the gap between everyday life and failed ambition. I adjusted the exposure to keep some details in the dark alleyway shadows. It was a rewarding find while wandering off the beaten track.”
