A vertical shot of Angkor Wat temple at sunset, with the stone towers glowing golden-orange. The temple and surrounding palm trees are reflected clearly in a still pond in the foreground. A small figure of a person stands on a path between the water and the temple under a blue and white sky.

Golden Hour at Angkor Wat

As evening approaches in Cambodia, the World Heritage site of Angkor Wat catches the final rays of the sun. The blue sky softens, casting a warm, honey-colored light across the ancient sandstone. Below, the temple’s famous reflection stretches across the still water of a pond, framed by tall palm trees and lush greenery.

There is a distinct sense of calm and wonder that fills the air. As the heat of the day fades, the atmosphere becomes quiet and meditative. It’s a moment where time seems to slow down, allowing the scale of the Khmer architecture to truly sink in.

A single visitor stands by the water, providing a sense of scale against the massive stone structures. They are motionless, simply taking in the view as the temple begins to glow against the darkening horizon.

Photographer’s Note

“”The goal here was to capture that fleeting “Golden Hour” glow. Timing was critical; I arrived about an hour before sunset, setting up my tripod facing roughly east so the sun would set directly behind me. By positioning the camera low to the water’s edge, I was also able to maximize the reflection, but the shot ultimately relied on patience and luck. Watching and waiting for the wind to die down so the water would become a perfect mirror.

As the light began to shift, I shot in rapid succession, tracking the deepening colors on the stone. That brilliant, full gold finally hit the towers, lasting only a few moments before it vanished. At the time, some people were moving through the frame. However, I was lucky enough to capture this specific shot where a single, isolated figure remained, providing a perfect sense of scale against the architecture.”
