In the heart of Bangkok, an alley cat claims the night. This feline subject prowls through a narrow lane where the city’s frantic energy fades into a heavy, humid stillness. The location is a maze of weathered concrete and tangled power lines that frame a distant, glowing apartment block. Street food carts sit idle and draped in plastic, waiting for the morning rush. Shadows stretch long across the ground, creating a sense of quiet mystery and urban solitude. The air feels thick with the scent of rain and distant charcoal fires.
This photograph captures a compelling contrast between intimacy and scale. Deep shadows, pools of artificial light, and intricate urban textures create a richly layered composition, while the small figure of the alley cat introduces a quiet narrative that immediately draws the viewer into the scene.
On other occasions, I have captured this same location during the day in colour and again here, on a wet day, in black and white.
Photographer’s Note
“I stumbled upon this scene while wandering through a residential district not far from Charoen Krung Road. The high-contrast black and white tones felt necessary to capture the raw, gritty soul of the late night city. I waited for several minutes in the darkness, hoping for a point of focus to break the stillness of the architecture. When this cat finally stepped into the light, everything clicked into place. It provided the perfect scale against the towering buildings in the background. My goal was to show the contrast between the cat and the urban environment it calls home.”
